Broad Street, BristolBristol’s Old City, since 1295

The story of Broad Street 2022 to 2024

Taking back the street

After centuries of carts, carriages and cars, Broad Street became a street for people on foot.

For most of its history Broad Street carried whatever traffic Bristol had: carts and drays to the inns, carriages to the Grand Hotel, and in the twentieth century cars, vans and buses squeezing past each other on a narrow, sloping street.

In 2022 Bristol City Council announced a £2 million plan to pedestrianise the Old City and King Street permanently.

In January 2024 new barriers were installed halfway down Broad Street, making the Old City fully pedestrianised, with deliveries allowed at set times. For the first time in centuries, Broad Street belongs to people walking.

Do you remember Broad Street?

A coffee and an email at NetGates in 1996, a haircut at Wild At Heart, brunch at Ironworks, or a desk in the offices upstairs: if you have a photo or a story about No. 51 or its neighbours, from any decade, we would love to see it.
