The story of Broad Street 2010 to today

Broad Street on screen

Victorian London, Sherlock Holmes’s student days and the Doctor’s sixtieth anniversary: Broad Street has played them all.

Broad Street’s unbroken run of old fronts makes it one of Bristol’s favourite film locations. Very little set dressing is needed to turn it into the nineteenth century, and it can just as easily play modern London.

Young Sherlock

For Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock, filmed in Bristol in 2024 and 2025, Broad Street was one of the main locations. It became a busy period street with nineteenth-century shop fronts for florists, butchers, barbers, taxidermists and printers. Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who plays the young Holmes, was filmed on Broad Street in January 2025. The series was released on Prime Video on 4 March 2026.

Sherlock

The BBC’s Sherlock (2010 to 2017) also filmed in the Old City, on Broad Street, Clare Street and Corn Street, as well as in the bank buildings near St Nicholas Market.

Doctor Who and others

Doctor Who: The Giggle, one of the sixtieth anniversary specials, filmed in the Old City in June 2022. Broad Street was used, and the Tardis was parked in an alley between Broad Street and Small Street. In 2019 the BBC’s The Trial of Christine Keeler filmed at the Grand Hotel.

Do you remember Broad Street?

A coffee and an email at NetGates in 1996, a haircut at Wild At Heart, brunch at Ironworks, or a desk in the offices upstairs: if you have a photo or a story about No. 51 or its neighbours, from any decade, we would love to see it.
