Broad Street, number by number

Cider House Passage

The narrow lane beside No. 51, once Bear Lane, named after the Cyder House that stood in it.

The passage between Nos. 51 and 52 was known as Bear Lane and then as Cyder House Passage, after the Cyder House that stood behind No. 51 by 1729. The Innholders’ Hall was here in the seventeenth century, and a Bird in Hand is recorded in the passage in 1816. Metal gates were put across it in 1990.

Do you remember Broad Street?

A coffee and an email at NetGates in 1996, a haircut at Wild At Heart, brunch at Ironworks, or a desk in the offices upstairs: if you have a photo or a story about No. 51 or its neighbours, from any decade, we would love to see it.
